Pleasing God, Making Disciples of Jesus Christ

The Security In God’s Love

ROMANS 8:36-39 – As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Every Christian faces the battle of doubt.  Sometimes it is intense.  The devil is the master of using this tactic. It worked with Eve in the Garden of Eden – Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”  And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths (Genesis 3:1-7).

Our own fleshly weaknesses lead to doubt too. It was so with Job – Why do you hide your face and count me as your enemy? (Job 13:24).  Job doubted God’s goodness and love to him.  Was God hiding His face from His child? No.  Did God count Job as an enemy? Hardly. He was a choice servant of the Lord.

When it comes to doubt, the devil, the world, and our flesh are extremely aggressive in seeking us to doubt God’s love for us.  They know if we succumb to doubting God’s love, gone is our joy, gone is our effective witness of the Gospel, and gone is the enjoyment of God.  And God does not delight in our doubting of His love especially when He has made it clear to us in His Word through His Son of the certainty of His love for us.

In today’s scripture is one of the most import “doubt-killing truths” in all of the Bible.  Linger long in this passage and realize that not a single thing or creature can separate us from God’s love.  But there is a catch. We must in child-like faith believe He does. God loves us because God loves us. Don’t ask why. Don’t analyze it. Don’t overthink it, and don’t doubt it. Rest and rejoice in the truth God loves us because God loves us.  And by the way, when God says, “Nothing or no one can separate us from His love in Christ” that includes ourselves so don’t live in self-condemnation.  God doesn’t.

PRAYER: “Father, I praise You that You love me with a love that will never let me go.”

QUOTE: “How amazing that God would love us and never stop loving us, even when we sin.”
